People walking through the theatre doors at Saint Paul Catholic High School will be stepping back to 1980 to take in the school's latest theatrical production.

The Saint Paul Players are set to hit the stage with Fame, an adaptation of the popular hit movie which will showcase the talents of the student actors, singers and dancers, said Roxanne Rees, a teacher at the high school and the director of the play.

The play is set to open Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. Tickets, available at the school, are $10 for adults and $8 for students.

"I'm so excited (about the production)," said Kristin Elsley, a Grade 12 student and fan of the movie who transferred to Saint Paul from Niagara District Secondary School in September to be a part of the production. "I used to dance to all the numbers."

Fame follows the lives of acting, vocal and dance students from their first day at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts to their graduations.

Eva Ortega said she had never seen the movie until she started working on her character, Carmen Diaz. She said she was hooked once she watched the movie.

"I became Carmen Diaz," joked Ortega, a Grade 12 student.

The cast, which includes 19 students, has been rehearsing since September. Including musicians and stage hands, about 40 students are working on the production, helping to turn the clock in the Saint Paul theatre back to 1980, with the decor, the fashion and the music.

Elsley and Ortega, who are both graduating this year and in their final performances as Saint Paul students, said the audience can expect a thrilling performance.

"We have a lot of really interesting harmonies people should pay attention to," said Elsley. "They are captivating, they bring things together."

Fame will run until May 24 with shows starting at 7 p.m.
