Instead of paying fines for late library items, readers could instead donate a non-perishable food item during food for fines week, which ran Oct. 27 to Nov. 1. CASTING HER BALLOT Marie Taylor of Crystal Beach just turned 92 and voted for the first time in her life in 2004 and was proud to mail in her ballot in time for Tuesday's U.S. federal election. Taylor was brought to Canada by her parents when she was a young child and didn't realize that she could vote in U.S. elections until she saw an ad in the local papers in 2004 advising U.S. citizens living in Canada might be eligible to vote. From there, she made a connection to Democrats Abroad. The local Democrats Abroad Niagara chapter celebrated Barack Obama's win at Kelsey's at Pen Centre in St. Catharines Tuesday evening. 218123 A BEARY BIG PRIZE

THE CHIEF Virgil School student Ricky Stratton examines the inside of a fire truck as his fellow Grade 6 students watch outside with envy. Stratton was chosen to be Niagara-on-the-Lake's junior fire chief to celebrate the Canadian Association of FIre Chief's 100th anniversary. Stratton was one of 100 junior chiefs chosen across the country. DOWN LEGION WAY Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 executive Jack Cox, left, Sam Stark and Patricia Street were happy to see town staff install street signs to officially mark the renaming of a portion of Albany Street to Legion Way this past week. This year to mark Remembrance Day, the legion will host a Remembrance Day parade Sunday, Nov. 9 beginning at the Legion at 1:30 p.m. as well a service at the Legion Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Poppies are available outside of retailers throughout town. 218121 LUNCH TIME

LUNCH TIME Thomas Gardner, 7, and sister Georgina, 9, enjoy lunch at the annual St. Davids-Queenston United Church Bazaar on Saturday. The Bazaar raised $2,000 for the church. TOP HONOURS Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School principal Lou Vescio, left, presents Grade 12 students Kathleen Weaver and Jason Zhao with certificates to recognize their scholastic achievement throughout the 2007-2008 school year. About 135 students were honoured at an honour roll banquet Wednesday evening at Cherry Hill Golf and Country Club. FOR KIDS' SAKE The 300 students in kindergarten to Grade 4 at Ridgeway Public School raised $1,800 by trick or treating for UNICEF this Halloween. The money will assist children in Malawi and Rwanda to go to school, giving them a chance for a better future. Five dollars can help provide pencils for an entire class while $1,500 will help improve sanitary conditions in school washrooms. The foursome collected enough candy to last them for weeks, said Nick, who dressed as a pirate this year.
