Margaret McIntosh has been affected by cancer in ways that all too many of us share.
This year marks the third time she will add her dynamic enthusiasm to the role of publicity coordinator for the Grimsby Terry Fox Run planned for Sunday, Sept. 14.
"I just want to do my part to ensure that when others lose loved ones, research is continuing to provide cures and a better quality of life," said McIntosh who has been running in the local fundraiser for the past 12 years.
The Grimsby Terry Fox Run committee has been busy planning for the upcoming event. Registration is at 9 a.m. at the Grimsby Peach King Centre.
"You certainly do not want to be late," said McIntosh. "We will be having some fun before and after our run with our 'Dunk'em for Terry Fox' Grimsby Team. It should be a really great time."
Grimsby team member Mitch Cocroft will be home from the University of Guelph to start the 5 km run at 10 a.m. as he leads the participants out of the starting posts.
Bette Ellis is the new lead for this year's run. "I am very excited, it has been a privilege for me as a new resident to be able to meet such a professional group of volunteers," Ellis said, adding that nearly 90 per cent of every dollar donated to the Terry Fox Foundation goes directly toward cancer research.
"It is hard to explain the feeling that comes over you as you cross over the finish line and you realize that you were part of something really big," McIntosh said. "It doesn't matter how you cross it, or how fast you cross it, you just hear the crowd cheering for you and you can only imagine what Terry Fox might have felt as the crowds cheered for him during his run."
Family participation is strongly encouraged. "We have a disc jockey, face painting, bubbles, our dunk tank, very generously sponsored by NRB Inc. from Niagara Inflatables and a complimentary lunch for all participants due to some very generous sponsors including Boston Pizza, Giant Tiger, McDonalds, Tim Hortons and the Superstore," McIntosh said.
Pledge forms are now available. "You can simply make a pledge for your family or go one step further and collect a few pledges from family and friends and bring them with you to register that morning." For more information, call Margaret McIntosh, 905-945-0727 or Bette Ellis, 905-309-0376.
