A daylight home invasion on Saturday has left one man dead and one of the home's occupants charged in his death.
Niagara Regional Police say four men ranging in age from 19 to 23 forced their way into a Carlton Street home carrying firearms shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.
At the time, four people were in the home, including one minor. Niagara police Const. Jacqueline Forgeron said the motive behind the invasion is still being investigated.
It is alleged that during the invasion one of the occupants, a 22-year-old man, shot one of the intruders. He has been charged with manslaughter. He received bail Monday.
A neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said he saw men fleeing the home.
"I walked out, two guys were running on the street with masks on," he said.
When police arrived at the scene a witness pointed out to them a fleeing vehicle which was believed to have been involved in the invasion. An officer followed the vehicle and called for backup. The three men inside the vehicle were arrested without incident close to the scene.
Police entered the home at 216 Carlton St., between Lake and Geneva streets, to find a 19-year-old man in the basement with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. He has been identified as 19-year-old Pedro Bello of St. Catharines.
Police also found the man alleged to have shot the intruder suffering from minor injuries.
Police say it is believed the parties involved knew each other, and they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
The landlord, Marc Caron, said he rented it to a mother and her three sons. He said the family had been living in the home for around four months.
The three men allegedly involved in the home invasion -- ages 19, 21, and 23 -- each face charges for robbery with a firearm; break, enter and commit and indictable offence, and forcible confinement. The 19-year-old has also been charged with failing to comply with recognizance of bail and possession contrary to a court order. The 21-year-old has also been charged with fail to comply with a probation order and possession contrary to order.
A bail hearing for the three men took place Sunday and all were remanded into custody pending a video hearing scheduled for this Friday.
