A 15-year-old Westlane Secondary School student was stabbed with a pair of scissors while at school Monday morning, but Kim Yielding manager of communications for the District School Board of Niagara says incidents such as this one don't happen a lot in this region.
"We take any of these incidents very seriously, but incidents like this happen few and far between," she said, adding help is needed to control safety. "A big part of students safety is the close relationships we've developed with Niagara Regional Police, and the work we do together to ensure student safety in our hallways and classrooms."
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene at around 8:30 a.m. after a staff member reported the Grade 10 student had been stabbed. The student was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The incident was reported to have happened in an upstairs hallway at the Pitton Road school.
Members from the Niagara Regional Police Service, Emergency Medical Services, and Niagara Falls Fire Department arrived at the school to find the victim had received an injury to his upper chest area.
Though the suspect had initially left the school area, he was arrested a short distance away without incident, off school property, said police.
An 18-year-old Grade 12 student was arrested by police at the scene.
The youth faces charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He was scheduled to appear in court in St. Catharines on Sept. 9.
Police did not release details regarding the cause of the altercation between the two students.
Yielding said that right now school safety is a big issue.
"We take a proactive approach to school safety, and that means we try and help to defuse situations before they come forward," she said, adding that working with students through different programs helps to develop a child from the ground up. "A big part of that is character education, and our RISE program, which stands for reducing incidents of suspension and expulsion. We offer students support with their education while maintaining school safety during a suspension. The program continues their education, focuses on character education, and establishes standards for student behaviour."
Anyone with information about this assault is urged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-688-4111 ext 2204 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477).
