Lorraine Pichette has always loved watching the sun rise and set.

It was more than 20 years ago that she first caught the photography bug while watching the sun rise and set.

"I love sunsets because I can shoot them from wherever I am," she said. "I love watching them along the river."

Pichette can often be found setting up along the river just before sunrise. One of her favourite photos is of the sun rising over the international train bridge.

She shoots in colour and black-and-white, depending on her subject. When it comes to the outdoors, she prefers colour to capture the rich glow of the sun.

"I love to capture the colours of the outdoors," she said.

She shoots close-ups of butterflies and flowers and uses her telephoto lens for scenic nature shots. She also carries her wide angle lens for sunsets.

A retired teacher, Pichette has taught herself Photoshop on the computer, but prefers to keep the altering of her photos to a minimum. She learned photography using film, but has embraced digital photography because of the number of frames she can take.

"With digital you can take five times more photos than you would do with film, yet carrying next to nothing," she said. "With film you had to be more selective in what you shot. Now you can go for more candids."

Pichette is currently looking to sell her Stevensville home in search of a new house to accommodate a photography studio.

For the month of October, Pichette's work will be on display at the Fort Erie Arts Council's gallery at 238 Ridge Rd. N. next to From Cover to Cover bookstore. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and closed Sundays and Mondays. Admission is free.
