While children will be out in search of candy and spooks Halloween night, the adults will be enjoying a meal, dancing and having a good time at the Shaw Festival Theatre.

On Oct. 31, the Shaw Guild, a group of volunteers that support the viability of the Shaw Festival, will present its annual Shaw Scary Halloween Gala. The event, taking place at the festival's production centre at Wellington Street and Queen's Parade, is a chance for adults to dress up and have fun, said guild member Peter Gill.

"You can dress up and wear masks. That is optional. But fun is required," said Gill. "It's our mandate."

Besides dinner, dancing and live entertainment, Gill said the gala will feature a fine art and rare wine auction, which features original works by local artists such as Trisha Romance and Chantal Poulin.

Gill said the auction will feature 27 lots of rare wine varietals.

While costumes are optional, Gill said there are individuals who dress up in the most creative ways.

"We seem to have monsters and a few Elvises every year," he said. "Others just wear fancy clothing with masks on. It's all about creativity."

The Shaw Guild has a deal with Act 1 Theatrical Supplies in Niagara Falls where those attending the gala can get a 10 per cent discount off costumes if ordered before Oct. 11.

Greg Bondy, owner of Act 1, said the superhero costumes seem to be in demand this year. Of course, there are always the traditional favourites, he said, such as pirates, monsters and of course, Elvis Presley.

"People can rent and buy costumes from us. There are the die-hard individuals who spend thousands of dollars on an elaborate costume," Bondy said. "But the typical costume costs roughly $25 to rent and $45 to purchase."

Act 1 is located at 2895 St. Paul Street in Niagara Falls. More information at 905-374-7455.

The gala begins at 6 p.m. with a reception followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Admission to the event is $100, with proceeds going to the Shaw Guild.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 905-468-1950.
