Record-setting athletes ushered into Wall of Fame

Two athletes are being inducted into the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sports Wall of Fame tomorrow.

Susan Grimstead and Jeremy Rempel were selected by a committee among the field of considerations. This will be the first time the Wall of Fame will induct disabled athletes, according to Clive Buist, the town's parks and recreation director.

"It's so impressive they can do that. So many people couldn't do that at all," Buist said. "If you look at Sue with the skiing and the high and long jump it's pretty impressive.

"I have enough problem on slopes with two legs. It's remarkable what she's done there. If you look Jeremy's record, it is just phenomenal. They are both tremendous athletes."

Grimstead shared the same disability of the late Terry Fox. She was a member of the Canadian Summer and Winter Olympic teams that won gold and set world records in high jumping, long jumping and downhill skiing.

"At that time, disabled sports was relatively new. There wasn't a high level of participation and funding," Grimstead said. "It's a lot different now. Things have changed in 30 years. I guess you could say I was a pioneer at that time. It's come a long way."

Rempel competed for over 10 years, beginning in 1985. He won numerable provincial, national and international wheelchair road racing competitions and ultimately earned eight championship gold and two bronze medals.

This is the fifth ceremony in what the committee hopes to become a long and honoured tradition in recognizing people in the local sports community.

All residents are invited to the ceremony at the Meridian Credit Union Arena at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.
