The Niagara IceDogs dropped two and won one of their games last week. It began with a home-and-home match up with the Oshawa Generals starting on Thursday at Jack Gatecliff Arena in St. Catharines.
Both of Oshawa's first period goals came courtesy of the power play from star forward John Tavares and Taylor Carnevale. The Dogs tied it up with goals from Thomas Middup in the second period and Matt Piva in the third. In their first overtime of the season, Oshawa's Kory Nagy got one past rookie goaltender Mark Visentin.
"Two sloppy goals I should have had. It doesn't feel good," Visentin said. "You can't let any distractions get in your head."
The IceDogs picked up a point in the overtime loss, and Visentin relished his first Ontario Hockey League game in front of a crowd of 3,016.
"I've been getting use to the speed, the only thing that's different out there is the smell of the air," he said. "It smells like popcorn. It's really loud, so you have to yell at the top of your lungs, so I kind of sound like a girl. Every save, the crowd's cheering."
IceDogs rookie forward Freddie Hamilton played on the penalty kill unit and said too many infractions cost them the game.
"We took way too many penalties, we've got to stay out of the box. Whenever it was 5-on-5, we were sticking with them," Hamilton said. "We even killed penalties well, but against Tavares and that team we just got to stay out of the box. We couldn't generate any offence."
Niagara hit the road to Oshawa and lost 6-4 in the third period at General Motors Centre. The IceDogs led 3-1 on goals from Piva, Michael MacIsaac and Andrew Merrett. Nick Esposto scored for Oshawa. Generals forward Andy Andreoff got one past Visentin, but Niagara defenceman Drew Schiestel scored shorthanded to cushion the lead, 4-2. The team began its spiral downward in the third. Johnson Andrews dropped the gloves with John Padulo and Schiestel followed suit with a tustle with Oshawa's Tyler Taylor. Tavares used special teams to his advantage scoring a power play marker and a shorthanded goal by himself. Oshawa's Robert Kousal tied the game up and Nagy scored the winner. The next night in Niagara, the IceDogs regrouped to beat the Brampton Battalion 4-2 in front of 3,027 in attendance at Jack Gatecliff. Piva opened the scoring within the first minute of the game on goalie Patrick Killeen. Andrew Agozzino and Merrett scored to make it 3-1. Battalion forward Kyle DeCosta scored on John Cullen. Brampton's Ken Peroff scored on the power play, but Piva scored his fifth of the season to close it out.
