Abitibi receives FSC
Business
Oct 10, 2008
Thorold's Abitibi Bowater newsprint mill has been certified to the Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody standard.

This certification tracks FSC certified material through the production process, from the fiber sources to the consumer. All of the Thorold mill's 100 per cent recycled newsprint production will be eligible to carry the FSC logo as a result of the certification.

This decision builds on Abitibi Bowater's existing commitments to certify 100 percent of its managed forests to one of the three predominant North American certification standards. These include the Canadian Standards Association, Sustainable Forestry Initiative and FSC standards.

Abitibi Bowater produces a wide range of newsprint, commercial printing papers, market pulp and wood products. The company announced last month it was shutting down for the month of November, temporarily laying off 480 employees because of market conditions.
