Two men were arrested after they flipped a reportedly stolen van on Meadowvale Road early this morning, said police.
One of the men, the driver, also went to hospital for treatment of injuries. The severity of the injuries was not known by officers at the scene, said Det.-Sgt. Cliff Priest of the collision reconstruction unit.
The van flipped at about 2 a.m., said Priest, after the driver attempted to turn west on to Meadowvale from Scott Street at a high rate of speed.
The driver lost control, hitting the northside curb of Meadowvale, said Priest. The van, a red GMC Safari, began to rotate, before flipping and coming to a rest on its roof near St. Helena Street.
“It hit the curb, flipped over and ended on the roof,” said Priest.
Glass and debris were spread throughout the road. Patrol officers came across the van at about 2 a.m., said Priest. The men were arrested at that time.
Priest confirmed that police had “interaction” with the vehicle earlier in the night, but would not say if there was any sort of pursuit. The province’s Special Investigations Unit was called to the accident, but did not stay to investigate, said Priest.
There were no other vehicles involved, said Priest. Officers with collision reconstruction continued to investigate well into the morning, taking more notes after the van was righted onto its wheels.
Bill Lang, who lives on Meadowvale right near the crash, said he didn’t hear anything during the night.
“I looked out the window (this morning) and saw the van there and thought, ‘Why was it parked there,’ “ said Lang. “I took another look and then saw it was upside down. I never heard a bloody thing.”
Details about the arrested men were not immediately available.
