The Halton Regional Police Services Board voted last Thursday to request funds from the newly-established Police Officers Recruitment Fund, with the hope the money will be enough to hire five additional officers for the region.
The federal government established the fund when the budget was announced in February, to allow provinces and territories to participate in a national effort to recruit 2,500 front-line police officers over five years.
Ontario received $156 million from the fund with $78 million going towards new OPP officers, $20 million for the hiring of new officers for First Nations police services and $58 million going towards the hiring of new municipal officers.
The board is looking to secure part of that $58 million for municipal officers noting Halton police will need a total of $350,000 to hire the five recruits.
The police recruitment funds are needed in Halton, as 51 officers are currently eligible for retirement with another 41 reaching that eligibility between now and 2012. The request will go before regional council for approval before making its way to the federal government.
