Abitibi reopens
Business
Nov 07, 2008
Thorold's Abitibi Bowater, which was originally scheduled to shutdown for the entire month of November, will re-open its doors Nov. 11.

At the end of September the company, which produces recycled newsprint, announced to its 480 employees that it planned on closing its doors for the month of November due to market conditions.

Before the announcement of a shutdown, the company had also said it would reduce its productivity by up to 35,000 tonnes over the next three months.

Mike Lambert, Niagara's national representative for the Communications, Energy and Paperworks Union, said the company decided to shorten the shut down because prices changed.

"There were dramatic changes in the craft pulp market," said Lambert.

He also said that downtime was redistributed to a plant in Thunder Bay.

"People are happy that it's not going to be as long as first announced," said Lambert. "Nobody likes downtime."
