Rangers edge Peach Kings in shootout
Sports
Nov 07, 2008
The Grimsby Peach felt the wrath of the shootout last week.

Vying for a four-game winning streak, the Peach Kings were edged 2-1 by the Glanbrook Rangers in a shootout last Friday night at Grimsby Peach King Centre. The game came just a day after the Peach Kings defeated the Chippawa Riverhawks 5-2, in Chippawa.

Against Glanbrook, the Peach Kings were stoned by Rangers netminder J.D. Shaw, who stopped 53 of 54 shots for the win. He turned away all three Grimsby shooters in the shootout.

Stevan Manojlovic, assisted by Kyle Fraser and Kevin Long, was the only Grimsby player able to beat Shaw. He scored at 18:30 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Glanbrook's John Leszko had opened the scoring nearly five minutes into the second period.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, it was off to shootouts to decide the tie.

Rookie Ian Jones, who had a solid effort stopping 29 of 30 shots, was able to stop the first Glanbrook shooter, Mike Szelagiwiecz, but Tom Cole scored on his second shot.

Ryan Roberts, Connor Rilett and Trent Minor all missed on their chances in the shootout.

The teams were doing battle in a rematch in Glanbrook on Wednesday night (a final score was unavailable at press time).

On Thursday, the Peach Kings peppered the Riverhawks with 41 shots in the 5-2 victory.

The Peach Kings led 4-0 after two periods, following goals by Jason Recek, Steve Dumoulin, Trent Minor and Kenny Bradford.

Chippawa netminder Kristian Docherty was yanked in the third period and the Riverhawks' offence came alive as goalie Yvon Boulet, in relief for Docherty, stopped all 11 shots he faced.

Ryan Lane and Dustin Dunseith of Chippawa were able to score to make it 4-2, but that was as close as they would get, as Matthew Beachin added an empty netter with 36 seconds left to make it a 5-2 final.

Mike Tardif picked up the win, turning away 17 of 19 shots for the Peach Kings.

Going into Wednesday night's game, Grimsby had a record of 8-2-1, for 17 points in 11 games. They lead the Niagara District Junior C Hockey League's East Divison by two points, over the Chippawa Riverhawks, who had a record of 7-4-1, for 15 points in 12 games. Glanbrook was a close third, with a record of 7-6-0, for 14 points in 13 games.

The Peach Kings return home to face Dunnville Terriers tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. at Grimsby Peach King Centre.
