Residents lined the streets of Port Dalhousie on Sunday morning to catch a glimpse of the annual poppy parade - a tradition upheld by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 350 for over 40 years.

Despite the chilly grey weather, members of the Legion, along with members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Niagara Regional Police, Royal Mounted Police, the St. Catharines pipers and others, marched valiantly from Lakeport Drive to Main Street towards a cenotaph where a remembrance presentation commemorating soldiers lost in wars past and present took place.

"Today we express our greatest thanks to those who fought on our behalf and died on our behalf," said MPP Jim Bradley, who joined the ranks for the morning service.

"It is everybody's duty to remember," said St. Catharines resident Sheila Jones, who takes part in the parade every year. "This is not only for soldiers from the first world wars, but also in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those are our sons and daughters. It's so very important."

Several wreaths were placed in front of the cenotaph before the group made their way back to the legion for refreshments.

The parade is held the weekend before Remembrance Day to enable people to attend regular services on November 11.
