Jessica Fickel is one of those student-athletes that does it all.

The Fort Erie Secondary student plays school soccer, hockey, volleyball, cross country and golf, and of course, basketball -- outside of school she plays travel hockey with the Niagara Falls Rapids and travel soccer.

Fickel headlines an accomplished fall sports program this season for FESS.

The 17-year-old captain and starting point guard, put up 160 points in eight high school basketball games and 100 points in tournament matches.

"She's our star player, our strongest player. She's very quick and dedicated. She's one of those girls that nevers misses a practice," said FESS coach Kerry Passero.

The 5-foot-7 Fickel doesn't have a problem moving around the court against larger opponents.

"She doesn't have trouble against the taller players," said Passero. "Because she's so much natural athletic ability, she can manage."

Last week, the Falcons reached the Zone 3 semifinals, but came up short (56-41) against E.L. Crossley, who would eventually go on to defeat Saint Michaels 45-39 in the final.

Fickel had four steals that resulted in baskets, but E.L. Crossley made baskets from all over the court.

Seniors Lori Martin and Claire Woodruff played a solid defensive game and Grade 9 rookies Tiffany Johnston and Kelsey Waters met expectations considering the circumstances, according to Passero.

"They did exceptional considering they were covering girls three years older than them," she said. "This was a buidling year for the senior girls basketball team."

The squad consists of combination of senior and junior players.

Woodruff finished the season with 74 points and Martin, 65. Johnston and Waters completed the season with more than 30 points and a dozen steals.

In her third season of coaching girls basketball, Passero said couldn't imagine what their offence would look like without Fickel.

"We would have some trouble bring the ball up the floor and we wouldn't be scoring as many points. She's surrounded by some other good players, but she's our key," she said. "She really takes control of the ball and calls out plays. Even in practice she's great in teaching new players where to go."

In girl's golf, Fickel placed second in Zone 3, and had a top 10 finish at the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association tournament.

For the boys, Jack Gibson took first place in the Zone 3 round and placed second at SOSSA.

Gibson finished in the top 20 at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association tourney.

The FESS senior boys volleyball team finished first in their season.

The team was led by a number of key returning players of Chris Chew, Gibson and Trevor Parkes. Rookie Bryan MacSweyn made a name for himself as an outstanding hitter in the starting line up.

The senior boys football team won its first game in two years last Wednesday.

In their final game of the high school Varsity 1 football season (Week 7), the Falcons flew by the Beamsville Bucks 41-13.

Up next for FESS winter sports is boys hockey and basketball, girls volleyball, swimming, badminton and wrestling.
