To Canadian golfer Mike Weir, the sport he has mastered and wine go hand in hand.
Which is why he was excited to announce Monday that his wine company, Mike Weir Wine, has teamed up with Niagara-on-the-Lake's Chateau des Charmes to produce Weir's signature line of alcoholic beverages. In front of a crowd of wine industry insiders at the official announcement at Chateau des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Weir said by working with Chateau des Charmes, the quality of wine will be top notch.
"The Bosc family (operators of Chateau des Charmes) have been doing this for six generations," Weir said.
"They have strong ties to Niagara and the focus on quality fits in well with my concept of what wine should be."
Paul-Andre Bosc of Chateau des Charmes said he's looking forward to the partnership and the winery will offer its vineyard and knowledge to producing the wine.
"We will work together to produce wines that represent the values and personality of Mike Weir," said Bosc. "Fine winemaking is an artform. Our materials are soil, water and light."
Along with the partnership with Chateau des Charmes, Mike Weir Wine is also working with the Niagara Parks Commission on the future home of Mike Weir Winery on a 15-acre parcel of land along the Niagara Parkway that will be adjacent to Whirlpool Golf Course. The winery will feature a retail and hospitality centre, vineyard and a gallery showcasing highlights from Weir's golf career.
"I used to play quite a bit at Whirlpool," Weir said. "It's a nice location for the winery and will tie in golf and wine."
Jim Williams, chair of the Niagara Parks Commission, said the winery will be near the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and it gives a chance for students of the horticulture centre to have a first-hand learning experience on how to grow grapes in Niagara.
Weir said the greatest part of the announcement was knowing that proceeds from the sale of the wine will go to the Mike Weir Foundation, a charitable organization that he established in 2004 dedicated to advancing the physical, emotional and educational welfare of children.
"I'm focused on helping children out and this is a great step towards that," Weir said.
