The legacy of Mike Vandendool was honoured last month at a ceremony recognizing five philanthropists from across the Golden Horseshoe.
Before he passed away in April at the age of 12 following a 17-month battle with cancer, Vandendool started a foundation, Mike's Miracles, which supports numerous charities helping other children affected by the disease.
The Vandendool family has vowed to continue the work of the foundation. Among the organizations helped by the foundation are Ronald McDonald House, McMaster Children's Hospital and the Rankin Run. As well, over the summer the family donated a boat to Camp Trillium's Rainbow Lake facility near Waterford, where they visited the previous year before Mike died.
On Nov. 18, the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals celebrated National Philanthropy Day with an awards ceremony held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington.
Mike Vandendool and the Mike's Miracles Foundation were honoured as the Youth Philanthropist of the Year.
