The Pen Centre was one of four business with a combined total of 160 years of service within the community honoured by the St. Catharines-Thorold Chamber of Commerce. The presentations were made during the chamber's Business after 5 meeting held at Keefer Mansion in Thorold recently.

"It is important to demonstrate not only to the members of our chamber of commerce but to the community the success stories within our business community by acknowledging their accomplishments. It demonstrates the economic strength of our community," said chamber general manager Walter Sendzik.

Among those businesses being honoured was the Pen Centre in St. Catharines. The Pen is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

At one time, the Pen Centre was the fourth largest mall in Canada, with over one million square feet of floor space. The Pen Centre was originally an outdoor mall and eventually enclosed and expanded several times to reach over 180 stores and services in present day. The original anchors of the Pen included Loblaws and Miracle Mart, and there were 50 retail stores. Simpsons-Sears was added in 1966 and Eaton's held a grand opening on Easter Monday in 1973. Two years later Robinson's department store opened in the former Miracle Mart location, which is now the present day Bay store. Today the Pen Centre, originally known as the Niagara Peninsula Shopping Centre, is the largest mall in the Niagara region.

Manager John Bragagnolo said he felt honoured to receive the acknowledgement from the chamber.

Other businesses and members receiving acknowledgement included Serge Carpino from Canal City Realty for 25 years of service. Serge's daughter Taryn recently graduated from Brock University and will be partnering with her father in the business. She received a brief acknowledgement for her success from the chamber.

EJ Barilla Insurance Company was also honoured for 25 years or service, and finally the Thorold Community Credit Union was honoured. The Thorold Community Credit Union has been a staple in Thorold for 60 years.
