Abitibi Bowater joins the list of Niagara industrial employers that are temporarily shutting down operations.

Last week, the company which produces recycled newsprint announced to its 480 employees that it plans to close its doors for the month of November due to market conditions.

Mike Lambert, Niagara's national representative for the Communications, Energy and Paperworks Union, said that there have been different discussions about the downsizing of the workforce. He said that recently the company said it would reduce its productivity by up to 35,000 tonnes over the next three months.

"We're disappointed," said Lambert. "But we understand it's the company's decision."

Lambert also added that there have been enough shutdowns already in the industry.

He said the federal and provincial governments aren't looking into the situation.

Some maintenance will be done during the month of November at Abitibi, but Lambert said that the company will likely be cutting jobs when the month-long shutdown is over.

"For this mill, it's been many years since it has taken this much downtime," said Lambert.

Lambert said the union is trying to work with the company to mitigate the layoffs.
