Money needed before Santa comes to Bridgeburg

It may be August, but planning for the town's 36th annual Santa Claus Parade better begin soon or all the acts will be booked, says one of the organizers of last year's event.

Last year, the town allocated $16,000 left over from Winterfest to the Bridgeburg BIA to organize the parade. The Friendship Festival, which played a key role, is willing to help out again this year.

The only problem is there isn't any more money left over.

Friendship Festival manager Flo Odding said the festival, like many non-profit groups in town, have trouble finding volunteers to run their own bingos to raise money, never mind take on an added responsibility.

Odding told The Post the time to organize the parade is getting closer and funding needs to be sorted out as soon as possible. She said her group would be more than willing to take on a key role in organizing the parade again this year.

"The (Friendship) Festival wants to work with whoever runs the parade this year," she said.

Coun. Sandy Annunziata, who sits on the BIA's board, said the BIA has asked area non-profit groups to volunteer their time to run bingos to raise money for the parade.

Annunziata said the funding issues are still being worked out.

At the July 21 council meeting, Coun. Ann-Marie Noyes asked if the parade could be run on a smaller budget. Coun. Rick Shular said compared to other communities, $16,000 isn't a lot of money to spend on a parade.
