Staff and students at Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School are busy betting what they will pull out of the school's wall next Thursday.

As part of the school's 100th anniversary celebrations, students and former staff will remove the school's cornerstone to unveil a time capsule from 1927 -- the year the building was constructed.

"Maybe there will be an extra set of keys to a Model T Ford," joked vice-principal Fred Louws. "I have no idea what will be in there."

History teacher Cal Nigh thinks there might be newspaper clippings, a class picture and maybe a school pin. Nigh's Grade 10 class is in charge of compiling items to include in a new time capsule.

The class will vote on the final items to be packed safely into a well-sealed Tupperware container, but suggestions include an iPod with hit songs, videos and voice recordings from students. Students in his class are writing letters which will also be included in the new time capsule, to be opened in 50 years.

Former RCBHS staff are invited to attend the ceremony which will be held Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. to coincide with a staff reunion wine and cheese.

So far, unofficial plans for the anniversary weekend, May 15 to 17, 2009, include a school open house, a variety show, a soccer game against Fort Erie Secondary School's team, a ceremonial generation relay and the largest celebration of the weekend, a dinner-dance at Crystal Ridge Lions Hall.

Louws also hopes to hold a re-dedication of Pride Field to thank all of the donors who made the construction of the track possible. A donor's wall would commemorate the contributors.

The school is also looking to borrow memorabilia to be placed in themed rooms which will be toured by alumni during an open house. So far, the rooms will be organized by decade and there will also be other themes -- the school's third floor will be dedicated to the memory of the Crystal Beach Amusement Park.

Louws was a student himself during the 75th anniversary. While it's impossible to reach each and every former student, the internet has played a key role in putting the word out.

The anniversary planning committee, of which Louws is a member, has constructed an official commemoration page at www.rcbhsreunion.com.
