Niagara police and provincial biker enforcement officers seized more than $1-million in US Currency from suspects in Crystal Beach after a lengthy investigation, said police.
Police said the money is believed to come from drug sales. Police said an investigation began in June and after three months it lead officers to the apprehension of the suspects Wednesday.
Three men are now behind bars facing several criminal charges.
On Sept. 24, local police contacted US officials to notify them that a vessel suspected of being involved in criminal activity had entered American waters on Lake Erie. When U.S border patrol found the boat, it failed to stop. The boat then returned to Canadian waters and landed at the public boat ramp in Crystal Beach.
"The boat was being pursued in Lake Erie. Then the boat fled from US officials, and returned to Canadian soil where two suspects were taken into custody," said media relations officer Cst. Jacquie Forgeron.
Two of the three men jumped from the boat as it entered the shallow water.
Officers with the Ontario Provincial Biker Enforcement Unit arrested two men on Canadian soil. Several duffel bags filled with in excess of $1 million in US currency were seized.
Two men from Cornwall have been charged with laundering proceeds of crime and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. The suspects have been held in custody pending a bail hearing in St. Catharines.
The third suspect headed back across the lake and was arrested when landing, and a boat was seized.
A 48-year-old resident of Tonawanda, New York State is charged with failing to pull over his boat.
