Book sale to help save pool
Fort Erie
Oct 10, 2008
The push to save the Kinsmen Pool is still on.

Fort Erie's second annual Biggest Book Sale fundraiser is set for Saturday, Oct. 18

The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Fort Erie Leisureplex Lions Hall and proceeds will support the Kinsmen Pool Committee and Library Teen Advisory Council.

Although the committee's goal is at least $500,000 to replace the pool and match council's verbal agreement to commit the same amount to a splash pad, Kinsmen Pool fundraising committee chair Stephen Passero has high hopes for a facility that will play host to swim meets and lifeguard championships for competitors from across the region and possibly province.

Council looked to close the pool to avoid paying more than $100,000 a year over the next decade to keep it open. The leaking pool was built in 1967 and has cost the town more than $50,000 to replace equipment.

Town staff estimate it would cost close to $1.5 million to replace the pool and maintain it over the next 10 years, $1.3 million to restore it for another 10 years and $540,000 to install and maintain a splash pad.

Books can be dropped off until Oct. 17 at Movie Gallery, 450 Garrison Rd. Magazines or encyclopaedias can't accepted as donations.
