Kinsmen Club begins firework sales

The Kinsmen Club of Grimsby will be providing the community with enough ammunition to have a blowout this May long weekend at its Victoria Day firework sale. But club members remind everyone to play safe.

"We want to be as safe as possible. That's our one motto. It's nice for families to celebrate Victoria Day, but it has to be done safely," Kinsmen member Rick Manners said.

The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 13 to 19 in the Food basics parking lot on the corner of Main Street West and Christie Road.

All funds raised, go towards club projects and general expenses.

"We raise enough funds from these events to cover our entire operating costs," said Mr. Manners.

In fact, members usually raise $40,000 each year through their Canada Day and Victoria Day sales, which they have done for about 25 years.

Due to new government regulations for next year, club members are taking a "proactive approach" to create a safer trailer.

Mr. Manners said they'll install compartments to contain the fireworks, which will prevent a series of explosions in the case of one going off.

"We're going to be proactive as a club," he assured.

They're also going to use fireproof paint on the inside of the trailer.

Mr. Manners said the club is looking to make these changes during the summer.
