The Niagara West Mayor's Tournament goal of raising more than $35,000 is getting even closer.
Miles Kulik, mortgage manager at Toronto Dominion Canada Trust bank, donated an extra $2,500 to the cause Aug. 12 at the Casablanca Winery Inn in Grimsby.
Since its conception, the tournament has raised $82,000, with last year being the most successful, bringing in $34,600.
Eric Gilbert, the owner of Ericway Tire Inc., said he and the other organizers know they're close to their target, but he doesn't want to prejudge the numbers before funds are received from the silent and live auctions and raffle.
Fifty per cent of the funds raised go to the Niagara West Community Fund, which is an endowment fund within Niagara Community Foundation, while the other half is divided between other local charities.
"The success has been the amount of people getting involved - not to mention the mayors bring a sense of prestige to it. I think people like to have one day out with the mayors," said Gilbert.
The tournament starts at 1 p.m. on Aug. 27 at Twenty Valley Golf Course in Vineland. The tournament has sold out for the fourth straight year, said Gilbert; however, there may be cancellations.
If people still want to come, Gilbert said, they could call him on his cell at 905-988-8473.
Also, this year people are invited to come out for just the dinner at 6 p.m. The dinner costs $50.
Organizers are asking that businesses donate more items for door prizes and for the silent auction.
So come out and see if Lincoln Mayor Bill Hodgson can defend his title as the mayors make a putt from 60-foot crane, from Bucknall Crane Service.
