U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have revoked the NEXUS membership of a St. Catharines man.
The 71-year-old was stopped at the Peace Bridge when he tried to cross the border using his NEXUS pass.
Officers selected his vehicle for inspection and found what border officials described as a small amount of marijuana contained in a gym bag in the trunk of the car.
During a secondary inspection of the vehicle, a CBP canine narcotics detector dog was utilized and alerted to the drivers' side door panel. A search of the door panel revealed a soap container with five marijuana cigarettes. A total of 27 grams of marijuana was seized and the man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and turned over to the Buffalo Police Department for prosecution by the Erie County District Attorney's Office. The man's NEXUS card was seized and his membership was immediately revoked.
NEXUS is a bi-national program that allows pre-screened, low-risk travelers to be processed with little or no delay by United States and Canadian border officials. Approved applicants are issued a photo-identification card. Participants cross the border in a dedicated lane where they present their NEXUS card and make a declaration.
They are then released, unless chosen for a selective or random secondary referral.
