A stretch of the Bruce Trail that runs through Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the featured hotspots as part of the festivities during Ontario Hiking Week.

The four-kilometre Wetland Ridge Side Trail that runs behind the Niagara College Teaching Winery and Woodend conservation area, is open for the public to explore this Sunday, Oct. 5, at noon. The event is hosted by the Niagara Bruce Trail Club.

Trudy Senesi, vice-president of the club, said members will be there to answer any questions about the club and the trail itself.

"People can walk through the vineyards and parts of a reclaimed wetland," said Senesi.

The Bruce Trail is one of than 20 events across the province organized by Trains Open Ontario, a trail exploration program offered by the Ontario Heritage Trust to celebrate Ontario Hiking Week.

Ontario Hiking Week began Sept. 29 and wraps up Oct. 5.

"Ontario Hiking Week is an ideal time to experience a Trails Open Ontario event," said Lincoln Alexander, chair of the Ontario Heritage Trust.

"Hiking along Ontario's trails provides an opportunity to appreciate our extraordinary natural heritage."

Health promotions minister Margarett Best said an active population leads to a healthier society. Best said Ontario's trails contribute to building strong communities.
