Nine veteran paramedics with Niagara Emergency Medical Services received the Governor General's Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal during a service in London, Ont., late last month.

Major Gen. Richard Rohmer, Canada's most decorated soldier, presented the awards to 125 paramedics from across Ontario Sept. 25. The award recognizes pre-hospital emergency medical officials who have excelled in their field and who must have completed 20 years of exemplary service -- of which 10 were in the performance of duties involving potential risk.

Niagara paramedic award winners included Graham Garratt and Randy Hague of St. Catharines; Blaine Bittman, Dennis Graveline, and John Scalzo of Port Colborne; Paul Taylor of Pelham; Dave Matthews of Stevensville; and Robert Mercer and Edward Levere of Fort Erie.

"All of us in Niagara extend our sincerest congratulations to these paramedics and thank them for the dedication and commitment to such a high level of service performed daily," said John Cunnane, director of Niagara Emergency Medical Services.
