Since 1973 the months of May to September have been fueled by all things cars for Gary and Marg Hertzberger.

That's how long the Thorold couple have been going to car shows.

"There are car shows, cruise nights, invitational shows," said Marg, listing the events while standing in the driveway of her Thorold home as husband Gary pulled his blue 1931 Ford Model A Roadster out of the garage. "He loves this car," she said.

Gary said it took a lot of work to get the Roadster into the condition it is today.

"At first it was a basketcase," he said, "It took five years to get it into shape."

The Thorold couple have three stylish cars -- the Roadster, a 1940 Ford Pickup and a 1976 Chevy Nova -- that, as Marg says, "all take turns" at car shows throughout the spring and summer seasons.

"Monday is the A&W on Lake street, (Tuesday) is the gateway in Grimsby, Thursday is the Pen Centre," she said.

This Saturday one of their three cars will be sitting on Front street as hundreds gather to watch the years of hard work, sweat and labour that have gone into the Hertzbergers' vehicles. It's the fifth annual Thorold Car Show, showcasing a wide variety of hot rods, classic cars, muscle cars and street machines ranging from all years, makes and models.

The car show won't just be about cars, though. Businesses on Front street will have a sidewalk sale and barbecues to showcase the extravaganza. Mayor Henry D'Angela will also choose his personal favourite car on Saturday from the classic cars that attend the show and present the owner with the Mayor's Choice Award. The trophy will be presented at 12:30 p.m. Door prizes will also be awarded. The Hertzbergers will be on site collecting money for a 50-50 draw, with proceeds going towards Chron's disease research. A lot of the time the couple spends at car shows goes to raising money for the disease that their daughter was diagnosed with.

"It's a worthy cause and it's one that not very many people know about," said Gary. The couple has raised over $15,000 for Chron's research so far and will be collecting money for the cause on Saturday.

The show takes place this Saturday on Front Street from Clairmont to Regent Street, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
