Fallen firefighters honoured during service
Wainfleet
Jun 20, 2008
Harry Flagg, platoon chief of the Wainfleet Fire Department, has been a part of the annual memorial service at Zion Cemetery for the last 13 years. As far as he knows it has been going on for a lot longer, about 30 years.

"Last year I got really involved and this year I helped to organize it," said Flagg.

This year's service took place on June 15, Father's Day.

"We honour the memory of fallen firefighters and past members by laying the wreaths down," said Chris Cole, who became Wainfleet's fire chief last July. "This is a township-run cemetery and one of the first memorial services like this in Wainfleet."

The Wainfleet Fire department was joined by the Haldimand Fire Department in laying the wreaths at the service followed by a moment of silence.

It was also a sentimental time for the Wainfleet Fire Dept. who lost honourary firefighter captain Alex Chorney on April 14.

"Honourary Captain Don Lambert will place a wreath where Alex is laid to rest," said Flagg.

Cole stressed the importance of this annual event.

"It's important for us to remember and honour past members and those who have fallen by continuing to hold this service year after year."
