Fund created for Long Beach clean up

The case a delegation made at the township's June 24 committee meeting has resulted in a fund for cleaning up Long Beach.

Trish Crossley, president of the Long Beach Homeowners' Association, said she has been coming to the beach since 1956.

"Gone are the days of family outings," Crossley told councillors. "Teenagers do not appreciate the beauty of the beach."

Nine years ago Crossley purchased a home on Walnut Hill and now lives there for six months of the year.

She says adolescent drinking, urination and garbage are problems on the lakeshore.

Crossley asked for $100 a week for garbage removal, in addition to more No Parking signs.

Chief administrative officer Scott Luey said the extra $11,000 for the summer can be taken from the grants account, which is for community organizations.

Crossley said the homeowner's association would be willing to supply the equipment for the clean-up.

She also mentioned year-round taxing compared to summer-month services, changing garbage pick-up to Monday and Friday instead of Monday and Wednesday, and that people not be allowed to park on the street because of the limited space.

The additional No Parking signs were also approved.

Related to the parking issue, there was a recommendation from staff to exercise the power to tow vehicles in violation of parking, which council opposed at the committee meeting.
