It's time to grab some bait and drop a line for the 21st annual bass fishing derby at the Chippawa Creek Conservation area.
The derby is Saturday, July 5, during a provincially-designated free family fishing weekend, so fishing licenses are not required.
The event begins at 7 a.m. and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place by weight in both the adult and child category at 3 p.m. There will also be a $500 cash prize for the person who reels in the tagged bass.
Mike Boyko, manager of field operations at the conservation area, says he believes the tagged bass has been included in the derby since the year it first started.
He says the tagged fish has never been caught in the year they have tagged it.
"Last year or the year before someone caught a tagged fish, but it was from a previous year," says Boyko.
Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12.
Chippawa Creek Conservation area is located in Wellandport at 6193 Canboro Rd.
