Sunshine and farm fresh produce made for good sales Satu...

Jason shows you're never too young Seven-year-old does brisk business at Smithville Farmers' Market

Farm fresh entrepreneur Jason Maloney was up with the birds Saturday morning, setting up his stall as the youngest vendor at the Smithville Farmers' Market.

A seven-year-old with a big day ahead, Jason lined up fresh beans and tomatoes grown by his cousins, Jacob and Trevor Stephenson. The eggs were fresh from the barn from his rural neighbour Todd Liddiard.

And the chocolate chip cookies -- Jason baked them himself, staying up until 10 p.m. Friday night to take them out of the oven.

His sunny disposition and polite manners didn't hurt sales and by 9 a.m. Saturday, the blonde-haired businessman was already calling it a good day.

It was just the second weekend of sales for the young Smithville resident as he joined vendors at the new downtown location in the Convenience St. parking lot. But he was already a frequent shopper at the market.

Keeping a close eye from the sidelines, Jason's dad, Joe, said he regularly brought the boys, including Nikolas, 9, and Tyler, 9, to shop at the market because they love the local produce and that's how Jason got the idea to get involved.

"I decided I wanted to sell some stuff," Jason said from behind the tomatoes and beans and eggs and a bright yellow handwritten poster that advertised, 'Jason's Table'.

He wasn't the only one having a good day. The market was busy and there was a real sense of social gathering for the urban and rural residents enjoying the shopping and bright sunshine.

Now enjoying the new location, the market for the past three and a half years was located in the fairgrounds' pavilion behind the West Lincoln Arena.

Market Steering Committee Chair Albert Witteveen and members led the move to the new location.

White tents form a U-shape around the parking lot and it's easy for customers to make the rounds.

The Smithville Farmers' Market will be open for the season at the Convenience St. location, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday.
