Fighting NHS a community effort
Letters
Oct 24, 2008
May I take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the residents of the City of Port Colborne, Township of Wainfleet, as well as the many residents from the City of Welland and the Town of Pelham who have contributed to our community's response to the Niagara Health System - Hospital Improvement Plan.

Since the HIP was released in July, thousands have contributed to preparing our written response while involving themselves on committees, subcommittees, focus groups and public information meetings throughout the course of the past three months - truly a response that was produced by being extremely inclusive, therefore, sending a strong message from the entire community regarding our thoughts on the NHS HIP. Citizens, doctors, nurses, social service providers, emergency services personnel, businesses, industry, representation from our schools, youth and faith community, consultants and many others involved themselves in preparing an effective response with a desire to defend the level of health care services that our residents are justifiably entitled to. Petitions were prepared, distributed and signed by close to 17,000 people. A rally brought out over 2,500 people and a public meeting with Dr. Kitts brought out over 975 people. Save our ER buttons and lawn signs can be seen across the city. The Mayor's Youth Council is moving forward with a "Speakers Corner," located at City Hall for the next four Fridays (8 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.) to give an opportunity for thousands more to participate in sending a strong message to the province about the consequences of a negative decision.

The response brought forward to the NHS, Dr. Jack Kitts, the LHIN and the Province of Ontario is based on a culmination of efforts by the entire community. The response is efficient, well-organized and resourceful to in turn expect a decision that aligns itself with what our objective is - strengthening health care services within our communities.

I for one, recognize the contributions all of you have made and am extremely proud to lead a community with the determination that each and every citizen continues to demonstrate. Well done!! Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

As well may I express my appreciation to Amanda Street of the Leader for attending most meetings and functions, therefore having the ability to report accurately on all the efforts of our community.

Vance Badawey

Mayor, Port Colborne
