These vintages from Organized Crime winery are a 'hit'

It sits in the most romantic setting in the region, run by an incredibly intriguing women, and is shrouded with mystery. Why, it could be a Harlequin novel -- but it's not.

Organized Crime Winery is owned and operated by Jan and Krystyna Tarasewicz. The wines are made by winemaker Andrzej Lipinski (also of the Megalomaniac and Vineland fame) and the labels are designed by Brandever. The winery and vineyards are perched on the south-facing hillside edges of the Beamsville Bench tucked in between Hidden Bench Winery, EastDell Estates, Fielding Winery and Walters Estate (grape juice). A combination of near-perfect vineyard location and fertile soil gives Organized Crime a distinct advantage for growing deliciously intense grapes.

The first vintage in 2006 of 3,200 cases looked promising, but with winter kill and an intentional reduction in yield, the 2007 vintage was a mere 1,500 cases. But what a magnificent 1,500 cases it is.

If you're a fan of Gewurztraminer, the 2007 vintage is a giant blockbuster. Unfortunately, there are only 10 to 12 cases of this wine and it will be kept behind the counter for those who really appreciate a great Gewurz. The 2006 version ($22) is a beautiful expression of Gewurztraminer, rich, full and opulent, boasting honey, apricot, litchi and pink grapefruit notes married to a sumptuous framework that also provides structure.

Other great Organized Crime summer wines include:

  • Organized Crime 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, $16.

Just delicious, displaying gooseberry, grass and mineral notes on a juicy, round profile. This Loire lookalike is linear and focused, turning a little nutty on the finish.

  • Organized Crime 2007 Chardonnay, unoaked. $18.

Ripe and bright, focused to display its jazzy apple scented pear, mineral and citrus flavours, all tightly packed onto a refined frame. Enticing!
