Being a resident of Welland, I would not want to be in an ambulance being transported to this new centre of excellence (supposed replacement for the St. Catharines General) especially in the area that the NHS wants to build this state-of-the-art centre.
I would probably do okay until we got to Fourth Ave. and the traffic jam that is always there around Vansickle Road and Louth Street. If I was seriously ill, I probably wouldn't make it to the hospital in time.
But I have very great doubts after reading Paul Forsyth's article regarding the amount of money that speculators have spent in the area, plus what NHS has spent, that it is a political forgone conclusion that it will not move anywhere up the highway.
As much as I agree with Doug Draper and all the letters in all the local papers about moving the hospital to the 406 and 20 Highway, I don't think it will happen. But as the old saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so keep on writing everyone and we might just beat city hall (aka NHS).
