Joe Crawford is at it again.

The local "jack of all trades" entertainer is off to Toronto to try his hand in a country singing competition. Crawford has high hopes for Country Music Television's National Country Karaoke Star contest, which kicked off May 5 in Vancouver. The audition tours eight major cities across Canada winding down in Toronto May 23.

Two contestants will be chosen from each audition site and Crawford is hopeful he will please the judges in Toronto with his entertaining personality and musical talent.

Crawford doesn't refer to himself as a country singer, he refers to himself as a jack of all entertainment trades and singing is just a part of what he does.

"What I do is singing comedy," Crawford said of his budding entertainment career. "I do some country singing in my shows so it's a part of what I do."

But don't expect Crawford to perform his signature Dolly Parton impression for the judges.

"It's a little more serious, but I can still have fun with it," he said.

Crawford has been playing piano since age 10 and singing since he was 13.

At the age of 18 he started performing singing comedy shows and keeps at it today. Prior to that he would entertain the residents of seniors homes around Christmas time.

Last year Crawford placed third in a web-based comedy challenge. He was the only Canadian to make it to the final round.

Crawford is hopeful the judges -- including country artist Beverley Mahood, a Toronto radio station on-air announcer and a surprise celebrity guest -- will be amazed by his abilities. But if not, he is happy just to have the opportunity to perform.

"In this industry you get a thousand no's before you get a maybe," he said. "And that maybe could be a no, it could be a yeah. But you have to put yourself out there to get it."

The two contestants chosen from each city will meet in Toronto Oct. 2 for the finale of the competition. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
