Ratepayers ignored in PLC pick

Betty Konc is not surprised that none of the four board members from the Wainfleet Ratepayers Association were chosen to represent the community on the public liaison committee (PLC).
"Did I want to be on the committee? Absolutely," said Konc.
Wainfleet residents Wayne Redshaw, April Jeffs, Anne Hetherington and Ashleigh Miatello Skrubbletrang were chosen for the committee at last week's council meeting.
Konc believes the reasons that she was left off the committee are various.
"The honest-to-God truth is that I believe most members of the recent council do not respect or approve of what the ratepayers association is doing," said Konc.
The PLC was formed to be a go-between for residents of Wainfleet and council regarding the issue of safe water in the township.
Wainfleet Mayor Barbara Henderson thought council was smart in the selection process.
"We wanted to have a good mix of representation," said Henderson. "So we chose three permanent residents of Wainfleet and one seasonal cottager to sit on the committee."
Redshaw is glad he was chosen to sit on the committee.
"I'm retired so I have more time on my hands," said Redshaw. "I think having the committee is important to the whole township."
Redshaw previously sat on the Wainfleet public advisory committee, which was created in response to resident's growing concerns on the water issue, from 2004 until it dissolved. Konc also previously sat on the public advisory committee.
"Regardless of whether those who were chosen to sit on the committee are for or against the project, I hope they represent the concerns of the community," said Konc.
Mayor Henderson said residents who were chosen to sit on the committee all met various requirements for which council was looking.
"We thought that we chose a broad representation of the community," said Henderson. "They represent various locations of Lakeshore."
Still, Konc remains skeptical.
"Time will tell," she said.
