New fees for Nickel Beach

Staff are hoping to attract more people to Nickel Beach with a new user fee.

An after 4 p.m. rate was adopted by council recently which would see users pay $5 to use the city beach after work.

A number of people come to the beach after work or supper for an hour or so before the beach closes at 8 p.m. the report said.

Since the beach opened (May 16) good weather days can be counted on one hand, the report said. The shoddy weather conditions have decreased revenue by 60 per cent compared to last year.

The report also introduced a senior discount second car season pass for $75.

The report said staff feel the charges are appropriate as adults are charged $3.50 an hour to use the city pool.

It is staff's hope the new rate structure will help meet the revenue target of $36,000 by summer's end.
