PoultryFest a clucking success

Early morning showers couldn't stop a year's worth of community spirit from shining through at PoultryFest in Smithville, Saturday.

The one-day celebration of everything chicken was once again a successful venture, said festival chairman Steve Ecker.

"The committee did a really good job of reacting to the pouring rain, and things looked pretty good," he said.

Loads of gravel and shavings were spread to keep the mud down, and keep the Smithville fairgrounds from really turning into a chicken coop.

"We were really thrilled with the turnout," said Ecker. "Obviously it's something that people want to do, when they're willing to show up on a poor day."

All of the family-related events "shone" throughout the day, he added.
