Kids can laugh out loud this summer at the Wainfleet library's summer reading program.
The Laugh Out Loud program, sponsored by TD Bank, allows kids to read fun books, create silly crafts, participate in activities and play hilarious games.
To launch the LOL summer reading program, Centauri Summer Arts Camp, which is a specialized arts training camp for boys and girls ages nine through 18, will be hosting two days of workshops. The workshops cost $5 each or are included in the $25 fee for the summer reading program.
On July 7 from 2:30-4 p.m. kids, ages four through 10, can learn to create poetry and songs, while children between 10 and 12 can participate in a comedy performance workshop.
On July 8 from 2:30-4 p.m. younger children can learn how to bring one of their favourite books to life using drama while older children can learn how to tell stories in a storytelling workshop.
Normal summer reading program sessions led by co-ordinators Katie Metler and Jen Christopher begin July 14 and end Aug. 22.
"There are seven weeks," said Leanne Good, Wainfleet library programmer. "Kids can attend one session a week."
The program includes making crafts, playing both indoor and outdoor games, participating in a mini-story time as well as making reading logs. Mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. are reserved for children ages four to nine while afternoons from 1-4 p.m. are for older children ages 10 through 12.
Good said that the kids set their own personal reading goals of how many books they would like to read by the end of the summer.
The co-ordinators then keep track of how many book each child has read.
She also said that for three hours, its worthwhile for parents to bring their children to the program.
"Normally people go to Welland or Port Colborne for activities, so it's nice to have something here."
The library, which has been running the summer reading for the past 15 years, usually gets about 10 to 15 children participating in it.
But it's not just kids who get to have all of the fun, the Wainfleet library, which opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, has summer activities for teens and adults as well.
Starting July 7, teens between 12 and 18 years old can join a summer reading club where they read 10 books over the course of the summer and vote for their favourite either online or in the library. On Aug. 18, a draw will be held for all those who voted and prizes will be awarded.
The adult program, which begins July 7 as well, runs under the theme "Food for Thought: Wainfleet's 100-Mile Diet" which encourages buying local food and eating at local restaurants.
Three events scheduled so far including a seminar on organic gardening, a farmer's market in the library parking lot and a cooking demonstration.
