The Grimsby Museum has hooked a new exhibit for the summer.
On display at the Grimsby Museum until September 26 is a special exhibition "Memories of My Mother: A Collection of Hooked Art". The exhibition features a collection of 60 pieces of hand-hooked art created by rug hookers from across Canada.
Traditional rug hooking is a relatively simple craft where loops of fabric are pulled through a stiff backing such as burlap resulting in a creation that is eye-catching and highly creative. This exhibition takes the craft beyond its simple origin as the rug hookers have used a variety of fabrics, fibres and embellishments tell the story of the person depicted or paid tribute to in the hand-hooked artwork.
On Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1, local rug hooker Ruth Emerson was demonstrating the art of traditional rug hooking at the museum. Some of Emerson's work is featured in the exhibition.
The Grimsby Museum is located at 6 Murray St. and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. On Monday, August 4, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission fees to the museum are $2 for adults and $1 for seniors, students and children over five.
