A Wainfleet teenager learned the hard way that speeding comes at a high price.
An 18-year-old Wainfleet resident had his car impounded and driver's licence suspended after being clocked at 129 km/h in a 50 km/h zone July 15. The teen was charged with stunting.
Police were carrying out traffic enforcement duties on Elm Street in Port Colborne when they observed a vehicle travelling northbound at an "extremely high rate of speed." Using a radar unit the constable on duty recorded a target speed of 129 km/h in a zone posted with a speed limit of 50 km/h. Police stopped the vehicle.
In accordance with recent amendments to the provincial legislation the driver of the car is alleged to have committed the offence of stunting. In addition to charges of speeding and use of plates not authorized for the vehicle. The 18-year-old driver possessed a Class G2 licence.
Current legislation states that upon conviction for stunting, drivers are subject to a fine between $2,000 and $10,000 and a licence suspension of up to two years.
Niagara Regional Police would like to remind motorists of the high cost of reckless behaviour behind the wheel, both financially and potential tragedy.
