Committees to respond to hospital plan

A team of individuals from Port Colborne and Wainfleet tasked with preparing a response to proposed changes at Port Colborne General have formed six new committees.

At a meeting last week, members of the Port Colborne Wainfleet health-care services committee designated six committees for public input -- emergency services; health, social services and transportation; seniors; youth and education; economic development; and service clubs and organizations.

Each committee will collect public input which will contribute to the overall response prepared by a hired consultant. The public are welcome to attend all meetings. The main committee meets Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

The two lakeshore communities are preparing a comprehensive response to both the NHS and the Local Health Integration Network, which is tasked with making the final decision. The response includes a petition, letter-writing campaign and proposal to separate from the health system.

Each of the six committees, a not-for-profit corporation that is in the process of forming, will be busy over the next two months as the September deadline approaches.
