A transportation saviour

In response to the letter written by Angela L. Browne about need for a high quality, reliable, affordable and convenient inter-city transit system in Niagara (Aug. 13), I wholeheartedly agree.

What many people don't know is what I will refer to as Niagara's best kept secret. We have a program operated by the Canadian Red Cross on behalf of Niagara Region that provides transportation for clients with mobility issues.

The Niagara Specialized Transit Program has been in operation since November 2006, but very few people are aware of its existence.

Approximately 70,000 residents of the Niagara Region were identified as possible users of this fabulous program. The program provides rides to persons who need transportation to dialysis or doctors appointments at a very reasonable fee.

There has been much talk of expanding the program to include rides to school or work.

Have you heard of the Niagara Specialized Transit Program? If you've heard the name, do you know what services they provide?

Do you have a family member or friend who is finding it difficult to get to appointments because they need help walking or transferring from a wheelchair to a vehicle or don't have access to a car?

The program provides access for PCAs (personal care attendants) to accompany the client to their appointments. I'm sure people on fixed incomes would appreciate the savings they would incur.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent getting this program up and running, why not get the word out? The Canadian Red Cross can provide you with an application form and answers to all of your questions if you are interested.

Call them so we don't lose this wonderful and very worthwhile program.
