Pirates drop first inter-conference game of season

Port Colborne was shut out 3-0 by the St. Catharines Falcons Sept. 26 at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
Brandon McGregor scored once and Miles Torch netted two for the Falcons. The Pirates outshot the Falcons 37-27. Nicholas Gigone took the loss, while Jeff Sinclair recorded the shutout. The next night in Port Colborne at West Side Arena, the Pirates disposed of the Niagara Falls Canucks 4-3.
John Williamson and Dillon River opened the scoring for the Pirates, while Cam McLean added a power play goal to end the first. Williamson and Ben Clarke scored in the second and Mike Kusy scored for Niagara Falls.
Canucks captain Antony Candeloro scored a power play goal in the third. Matthew Szostak faced 32 shots in the loss, while Gigone improved to 4-3 in five starts this season. He faced 30 shots. On Sunday, the Pirates hit the road to take on the Waterloo Siskins of the GOJHL's Midwestern Conference in an inter-conference game, something new this season and their first of six games they'll play outside of the Golden Horseshoe. The Pirates lost their first shootout of the season 4-3. They were outshot 34-29.
Not even a minute into the game, Port Colborne forward Cole Rubinoff scored on Siskin goaltender Colin Breen. In the second, Alex Roth tied it up for Waterloo, before Jordan Radford put Port ahead 2-1. Justin Knee scored on a penalty shot and Steve Collins scored shorthanded for the Siskins. Williamson tied the game up for the Pirates with less than two minutes to go. With no determined winner in overtime, both teams were treated to a shootout. Cody Loeffen scored for the Pirates, but Tyler Shiplo and Nick Bohdanec were denied.
Eric Lekun and Collins scored for Waterloo. Matt Madden faced 33 shots for Port Colborne, while Breen saw 29. The Pirates are in Niagara Falls tonight for the first time this season at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena.
