All aboard!
West Lincoln Community Care is inviting the whole community to board their tropical cruise ship - the gymnasium at Smithville District Christian High School - and enjoy a sunny fundraiser to help raise funds for the Smithville food bank.
"We'll be sailing to an island," said chair Janet Zantingh. "It's going to be a party."
The event doubles as Community Care's major fundraiser, netting $9,500 last year.
Volunteers have been all hands on deck for the past six months, planning the event with the goal of raising $10,000.
"We don't receive funding from other sources," said Zantingh. "This is really a grass roots organization and we really rely on the community for support."
Those attending can expect to be treated to a spectacular dinner, followed by an intriguing evening of laughter. Tickets are $50 per person, with a $25 tax receipt coming right back. Guests are encouraged to sign up for a table of seven or eight people, and need to dress appropriately for the event - in casual cruise or island wear.
"If you're not in costume, we'll make you walk the gang plank," said program manager Garry Warden.
All monies raised will be used for Community Care programming and to help the food bank meet its budgetary needs.
"The organization assists struggling families in transition in various ways," said Warden. "Our goal is to be a friendly face to the community."
For tickets, residents can call Warden at 905-704-9100 or Zantingh at 905-957-3438.
Also of interest this year is the Elimination Draw, where, at $10 per ticket, residents receive a one in 25 chance to win money ($25, $50 or $100) or - a $2,000 tropical cruise.
You do not need to be present to win and tickets are available at various locations.
West Lincoln Community Care is not United Way funded.
"We really need the community to realize this is our food bank," said Zantingh.
