Breaking records is becoming a tradition for Raymond Dykstra.

After another golden OFSAA performance this year, the Grimsby Secondary School student, heading into Grade 11 next year, now holds the provincial javelin records for Grade 9 and 10 athletes.

He unleashed a throw of 58.6-metres, breaking the former record of 58.39-metres from 2004.

"I was trying to go for 60-metres," the 16-year-old said. "But it didn't come through."

"In Grade 9, the feeling was just amazing," he added. "But this year, I don't want to sound mean, but I kind of knew I'd be top three."

Already this summer, he's training with the hopes of taking home record number three next season.

"I'm trying to break the senior record in Grade 11, so I can get all three," he said. "Not many people can say they got all three OFSAA records."

In 2009, Dykstra will take on the best Grade 11 and 12 students in the province with a heavier and longer javelin.

To prepare, he is practicing twice weekly throughout the summer at Niagara Regional Athletics in Niagara Falls.

It's hard for the youngster to believe he's best in province, since he only picked up a javelin to throw two short years ago.

"I might not be the best," he says. "There might be someone out there who hasn't thrown. Someone else could just pick it up and do exactly what I did."

He is now training for a national title, competing in a summer events with his club.

At a recent preliminary match in June, he placed first in hammer toss, first in javelin, and second in discus and shot put, just behind buddy Stefan Palios, also a GSS golden arm.

"But it's getting closer now," Dykstra said. "Now that the weights are moving up, the space between us isn't as far. We're getting a little closer."

A provincial meet is coming up in Kitchener from July 18 to 19, and a national meet is set for August 9 in Quebec.

"If I win provincials now, I'll go to nationals," said Dykstra. "That'd be a fun trip."
