Brock University women's basketball head coach Chris Critelli announced last week the addition of four recruits for next season, including two from local high schools.
Tara Giallonardo, a graduate of Welland's Notre Dame, and Amanda Lauzon, from A.N. Myer in Niagara Falls, will join the Badgers next season along with Jill Grobbecker from Stratford and Emily McKay from Mississauga.
Giallonardo was a four-sport athlete in high school, competing in basketball, track and field, soccer and volleyball for the Irish.
In 2007-08 she averaged 14.3 points per game for Notre Dame's senior girls basketball team.
"Tara will be one of the quickest players in the OUA this season," said Critelli. "She is a force on defence and will lead our transition game. Her ability to take it to the rack is uncanny."
In four years, the five-foot-seven inch guard helped lead the Irish to two SOSSA Championships and three straight Welland Tribune tournament titles.
She also played with the St. Catharines Rebels, winning three Ontario gold medals and one silver. She was also named the 2005 Ontario Cup championship MVP.
"Brock University is known for its high academic and athletic standards," said Giallonardo. "It is going to be a great place to grow, meet new friends and explore an ever changing world."
Lauzon was also a four-sport athlete at A.N. Myer playing basketball, volleyball, soccer and badminton for the Marauders.
The six-foot one-inch forward averaged 24 points and 14 rebounds last season at Myer.
In 2008, she helped lead Marauders win Zone 3 basketball and volleyball championships.
At the schools 2007-08 athletic wards banquet, she was named basketball MVP, volleyball MVP and the female athlete of the year. In 2008, she was the Harold Biggar Award winner as best female basketball player in Niagara Falls.
Lauzon also played with the Rebels and won back-to-back Division 2 OBA provincial championship titles in 2006 and 2007.
"I chose Brock University over many other quality schools because it is the school at which I felt most comfortable," said Lauzon.
Grobbecker played high school basketball at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School where she averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists last season.
McKay is, a graduate of Oakwood C.I. in Mississauga where she was a three-sport athlete, excelling in basketball, volleyball and softball.
In her senior year, she averaged 16 points and six assists per game.
